What is Universus?

This is your chance to join the Universus community!

Universus is a trading card game with over 20 years of history. The game’s popularity is taking off in a tremendous way. With incredible IP’s like Attack on Titan, Tekken, Star Trek, Critical Role, Godzilla, and My Hero Academia recently launching, the game’s future has never looked brighter.

Universus is a unique type of card game. While the collecting of cards is very similar to other trading card games, the gameplay is quite distinct. Instead of playing creatures or monsters and attacking with them, in Universus you are the character that is attacking. You choose a starting character to build your deck around, and fill your deck with attacks to defeat your opponents. Each deck also needs Foundations, which act as a way to enhance your attacks and allow your character to string many attacks together. The game plays similarly to a fighting game like Mortal Kombat, Tekken, or Street Fighter, with each character going back and forth stringing together combos and trying to break each others combos.

Deck Building in Universus

Choosing a character and building a deck is a thrilling yet daunting task, seeing as there now about 200 characters legal to play in the standard format. Each character has unique abilities, a hand size, and a health total, which makes every match-up feel different. Additionally, each character has multiple symbols to choose from, which means there are multiple ways to build each of the 200 characters. This event is a great way to learn the rules and begin learning the basics of deckbuilding with the help of our expert players.

The Competitive Side of Universus

Universus is a lot of fun to play casually; either with friends at home or at a casual weekly event (like the one we run at GU Brookfield Mondays at 6:30). Universus also has a thriving competitive scene, however.

Regional Championships, the National Championship, and the revered World Championship are the highest levels of play in Universus. The Milwaukee playgroup has had multiple players place in the top 4 of Regional Championships, and top 32’s of National Championships. We even have a few players in the running to be able to attend the exclusive World Championship, in which they only invite the top 32 players in the world. Being a part of the community means being able to join in on these thrilling events and compete with the best, in the most skill-testing card game developed. You’ll also be able to learn from some of the greatest players in the nation.

Playing in Local Qualifiers and Local Championships are an opportunity to hone your skills and earn invites to the high-tier events. Local Game Stores like Game Universe host Local Qualifier and Local Championship events. Stay tuned for our Season 3 event schedule!

This event is your chance to learn the rules and begin your Universus journey!
